2010 PINOT NOIR

2010 PINOT NOIR ANDERSON VALLEY

    This is a blend of two excellent sites in Anderson Valley- Nash Mill and Valley Foothills, Day Ranch. Both sites share the same south facing well drained slopes. This is a mix of Dijon clones 115 and 667, aged for 11 months in a combination of once used and new Hungarian barrels (25% new). This wine showcases bright red fruits, herbs and spices. The palate is full and complex with Bing cherry, raspberry, strawberry, orange peel and baking spices. It has nice balancing acidity, which keeps the fresh fruit flavors extending long into the finish. It should age easily for five or more years. This wine is a great match with Salmon.

2010 PINOT NOIR NASH MILL VINEYARD, ANDERSON VALLEY

    This vineyard is a real Gem. Located on the cool northwestern ”deep” end of Anderson Valley, it is right next door to Burt William’s Morning Dew vineyard. A co-fermentation of 75% Pommard clone 2 and 25% Dijon clone 115, this 4 acre site is growing on Franciscan soils with lots of cracked shale in the subsoil, allowing for excellent drainage. This 3 barrel bottling is all Pommard clone2, aged in once used French Oak barrels.

     Aromas of red fruits, dry forest floor, sandalwood and citrus rind, are the hall marks of Pommard clone and this site. It is focused and pure with red raspberry, dark cherry, orange peel and spices on the palate. It has a very silky mouth feel, yet possesses enough natural acidity to age for 5 or more years.

2008 SYRAH
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2008 SYRAH HUMBOLDT COUNTY

    The 2008 vintage was one of the longest, most even vintages we’ve experienced, which lead to very slow ripening of the fruit. The wines finally made it to maturity in the last week of October under beautiful skies. We received no rain until the 4th of November and we were able to pick each block slowly and methodically as they ripened. It was a winemakers dream. The temperate weather and extended time on the vines led to very typical cool climate Syrah characters.

    This 08 Syrah is sourced entirely from The Old Mill Vineyard, the source of Arias Syrah. We picked each block separately and fermented them with 25% stem inclusion. Aged for 24 months in all neutral, French oak, this year’s Syrah is very focused in style. It has green peppercorn, and spice accompanying the red and dark fruits. There are smokey/ meaty/bacony notes, slightly enhanced by the wildfires this year. We gave this wine extra time in the bottle in order to allow it to express its full range of flavors and aromas. It is a very structured wine with healthy natural acidity, a perfect accompaniment to grilled meats and hearty stews. For the Northern Rhone fans out there, it is very St. Joseph in style and character.

2009 SYRAH
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2007 MERLOT HUMBOLDT COUNTY     The 2009 vintage in Humboldt was an ideal year. We started with an early bud break and received very even temperatures throughout the growing season. The crop was very small this year due to inclement weather during the bloom period. We were lucky to have no real heat events and ten days of cool weather preceding harvest. This allowed this small crop to become balanced in its sugar, acid, and flavor components. The fruit was picked in the last week of Sept through the first week of oct and 24- 25.5 brix and each block was fermented separately in small one ton fermenters, pressed at dryness and transferred to 3 yr. old French oak barrels where they sat, on the lees, for two years before bottling, unfined and unfiltered. . It is a blend of three of our estate vineyards, Henderson Hill, Ishi Pishi Ranch and Kimberly’s.


    The resulting wine is full and rich, with a tremendous mid palate presence. It displays a nose of black pepper, red meat, black fruits and spice. This wine exhibits all of the characters we love about Syrah from this region. It is full, long and spicy with blackberry, dark red cherry, tons of cracked pepper and Christmas spices. We chose five barrels that would display the range of flavors and aromas each soil/site has to offer.

2009 SYRAH - KIMBERLY'S VINEYARD
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2009 SYRAH - KIMBERLEY'S VINEYARD HUMBOLDT COUNTY     Kimberly’s vineyard is a small, 3.5 acre block right in front of the winery. As with all of our vineyards, it is farmed biologically and organically. We chose this site for its 90 ft. deep schist soils, commonly found in the Cote Rotie region of France, and its northwestern exposure, allowing for lots of cool air to pour through the vineyards after the sun goes down. This low vigor sight consistently yields 1.5 to 2.5 tons per acre, with yields falling in the middle in 2009.

    This year’s Kimberly’s is spot on for this vineyard site. Co-fermented with 5% Viognier and aged in a combination of 3 yr. old French burgundy barrels as well as 20% new Hungarian, this wine has excellent focus and typicity. Black and blue fruits mingle with baking spices and floral aromas from the Viognier and 30% whole cluster addition. With more time exposed to oxygen it reveals saline, green olive and peppercorn. This wine has tremendous structure and has the ability to age easily for 7 to ten years. This vineyard continues to wow us every year. We are very pleased with these five barrels. .

73% SYRAH, 25% GRENACHE AND 2% VOIGNIER
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2009 LE DU COMTE 73% SYRAH, 25% GRENACHE AND 2% VOIGNIER HUMBOLDT COUNTY      Le du Comte is a joint project between winemakers John Cabot and Larry Schafer from Tercero winery in the Santa Ynes Valley . This unique wine is a blend of three great vineyards and is a blend of north and south. It’s a beautiful marriage of one barrel of Syrah from Thompson Vineyard in Santa Barbara County, one barrel of Grenache from the Camp 4 vineyard in Los Olivos, and two barrels of Syrah/Viognier co-ferment from our Kimberly’s Vineyard in Humboldt County. There was a 50% stem inclusion average and all components were aged in neutral French Oak for 30 months. This wine has loads of character and personality, displaying a broad range of aromas and flavors. It was a real pleasure to make and put together.

    It shows classic cool climate characters of dark black and blue fruits, pepper and spice, with a floral lift from the Viognier and nice red fruits from the 25% Grenache addition. The stem inclusion added structure and extra woodsy characters. You can swirl it for hours and it keeps revealing different nuances and aspects. It’s truly a fascinating wine.

ISHI PISHI RANCH, HUMBOLDT COUNTY

2009 ZINFANDEL ISHI PISHI RANCH, HUMBOLDT COUNTY      The Zinfandel from this vineyard is grown on its own roots, dry farmed, organically, by one of the valleys best farming families. The vines from this block are 13 yrs. old and were thinned to two tons per acre.

    Beautiful red fruits and spice are the all marks of this Zin. Pomegranate, raspberry, and tart, red cherry jump out of the glass and fill the palate. We included 20% Syrah from Kimberly’s vineyard to add spice and dimension to this bottling.

2009 CONFLUENCE
40% MERLOT, 28% MALBEC, 15% SYRAH, 15% CABERNET SAUVIGNON and 2% CABERNET FRANC, this year’s Confluence is sourced mostly from our neighbor’s Ishi Pishi Ranch.

2009 CONFLUENCE 40% MERLOT, 28% MALBEC, 15% SYRAH, 15% CABERNET SAUVIGNON and 2% CABERNET FRANC, this year’s Confluence is sourced mostly from our neighbor’s Ishi Pishi Ranch.  HUMBOLDT COUNTY      2009 was an ideal year for Bordeaux varieties up here. The warm spring and gorgeous fall allowed the fruit to ripen fully, yet showcase excellent varietal characters. One barrel of Kimberly’s Syrah was added for extra dimension. Aromas of black cherry, blue fruit, and spice are pure and unadultered by oak. The Syrah adds mid palate, spice and length to the finish. Aged 23 months in mostly three year old French barrels, with 12% new Hungarian making up the balance, I couldn’t be happier with this wine.

2009 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
HUMBOLDT COUNTY

 2009 CABERNET SAUVIGNON HUMBOLDT COUNTY      These two barrels were held back and selected in order to showcase certain earth and spice characters that we have been trying to achieve with this varietal in Humboldt County. It was pretty awkward in the beginning, showing lots of youthful vegetal character, yet has aged into a really beautiful wine, reminiscent of some fine examples from the Chinon region in the Loire valley. It has fresh turned soil, dry autumnal leaves and graphite on the nose. The palate is dark, showing earth, spice, integrated tannins and depth to the blue and dark cherry fruit. Three years in 10 yr. old barrels doesn’t show one bit on this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is definitely a world style of Cabernet, picked at 22.9 brix and clocking a very modest 13.2 percent alcohol. We held these two barrels aside from the 2009 Confluence, and aged it an extra year in hopes that it would become something special and unique, and the bet paid off.
