2006 SYRAH
HUMBODLT COUNTY
 |
This years Humboldt Syrah is a selection from our 10 year old, own-rooted, dry-farmed, vines in the Old Mill Vineyard. Individual lots for this blend were chosen to highlight the red fruit spectrum from certain vineyard blocks. These grapes were picked at an average of 24.5 brix, from Oct. 17- 31. Each lot was de-stemmed and fermented in small 1.5 ton fermenters. We included approximately 20% of the stems in the ferments, in order to add floral aromas and structural components to the finished wine. The wines were pressed off the skins after two weeks and put into neutral French oak barrels. 20% new Hungarian oak was utilized to finish the wine, adding only hints of baking spices and toast. This wine was bottled after 18 months in barrel, unfined and unfiltered. We expect this wine to improve and evolve for the next ten to fifteen years.
Aromas of earthy red fruits, cured meat, cloves, warm river rocks, and cracked pepper, leads into full, yet balanced flavors of black raspberry, kirsch, mulberry, bacon, licorice, black pepper, cedar, and warm spices, with bright acidity keeping the fruit aloft through a medium long finish.

2006 SYRAH - KIMBERLY'S
HUMBOLDT COUNTY
 |
The ‘06 Kimberly’s is a very exciting wine. The fruit for this Syrah is from our three acre, own-rooted, Syrah block in front of our winery. This gently sloping vineyard is rooted in decomposing shale soil, with larger rock making up greater than 60% of the composition. Although timely watering is crucial for this vineyard, we are able to achieve low yields of small clusters and berries. This vineyard produces wines that are more “new world” in their approach. The fruit was de-stemmed and co-fermented with 8% Viognier, adding notes of white flowers and lychee which lift the fruit components, extending the finish and adding balance to the meaty, spicier characteristics. Aged for 18 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak, 35% new, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Drink from 2009-2020.
A huge nose of black and red fruits is accompanied by honeysuckle, cinnamon, cardamom, and cured ham. The palate explodes with boysenberry, black raspberry, bacon fat, white pepper, and baking spices. This wine is concentrated and well balanced with juicy acidity, keeping the pure flavors pumping through the long finish. We couldn’t ask more from this great vineyard site.
